Gemini 2.1 (Nano Banana 2.1) vs GPT Image 2.5 for Fashion Photos

Gemini 2.1 is the image model that Google released on October 6, 2026 as Nano Banana 2.1.1 In our first tests for fashion, its strength is the photograph itself: with an art direction, the light, the skin and the small accidents look like a camera made them. GPT Image 2.5 is still our pick when a garment carries very small lettering.

Gemini 2.1 is now the default image model on Uwear. Below is one outfit on Gemini 2.1 and GPT Image 2.5, with the same saved model and four saved art directions. Then comes the one-line prompt, and the small lettering test.

What does Gemini 2.1 do well for fashion photos?

It makes an image that reads as a photograph. Each image below came from a saved art direction and a prompt that names only the model and the outfit. The direction sets the light, the place, the shoes and a short list of moments. Gemini 2.1 filled the rest with things nobody wrote: leaves on the step, the shadow of the railing, the edge of the paper set.

Four more directions on Gemini 2.1. Top: a hard shadow on chalk white, and a run for the bus. Bottom: a hand mirror in a grey vignette, and the edge of a clay court in low sun.

These are single images, one per direction, and not a benchmark. Check the face on every result. In two of the eleven directed images made for this article, Gemini 2.1 moved away from the saved model. The one we ran again came back to her.

Gemini 2.1 or GPT Image 2.5: how does each read the same art direction?

GPT Image 2.5 gives the direction back cleanly. Gemini 2.1 gives it back as a moment that somebody caught. The pairs below use the same outfit, the same saved model and the same art direction. The moment differs inside a pair because each direction rotates through a short list of moments.

What each engine returned for the same art direction, one image each. This is not a benchmark.

This is not a ranking. A product page often needs the clean frame, and GPT Image 2.5 gives it. An editorial or a lifestyle image needs to look found, not built, and that is where we now start on Gemini 2.1. The engine is one more creative decision, and a direction is worth a test on both.

What does Gemini 2.1 return without an art direction?

A generic frame. With a one-line prompt and no direction, Gemini 2.1 returned the kind of frame that Gemini Pro and GPT Image 2.5 returned in September: a grey seamless, a frontal stance, arms at the sides, and bare feet, because nothing named the shoes. On a city street it returned a generic sidewalk and a walk straight toward the camera.

Gemini 2.1 works without a direction, but it needs something to read before its taste shows. An art direction holds the decisions a photographer makes before the shutter: the light and its shadow, the place, the framing, the shoes, the moments. Gemini 2.1 takes those decisions and adds the rest. That is why the two work so well together. For the full argument, see why AI fashion photos all look the same.

Where does GPT Image 2.5 still win?

On very small lettering, in this test. A sweatshirt in our test set carries a small label that reads CHICANE. GPT Image 2.5 wrote it clearly at 2K in September. Gemini 2.1 wrote a different word in two 2K runs, and came close in one 4K run. The large back print on the same sweatshirt carried from the product photo on both engines.

The same label on an image generated with GPT Image 2.5 at 2K: the word CHICANE is clear
The same label on an image generated with Gemini 2.1 at 2K: the letters form a different, unreadable word
The same label on an image generated with Gemini 2.1 at 4K: the word is close to CHICANE, with one irregular letter
One small label, at the same zoom. Top left: the product photo. Top right: GPT Image 2.5 at 2K. Bottom left: Gemini 2.1 at 2K. Bottom right: Gemini 2.1 at 4K.

When a garment carries print this small, generate at 4K and check the result, or use GPT Image 2.5 for that product. The earlier test, with fabric texture and stitching, is in GPT Image 2.5 vs Gemini Pro and Seedream for fashion.

How many credits does Gemini 2.1 cost on Uwear?

Gemini 2.1 costs 3 credits at 1K, 5 at 2K and 10 at 4K. It takes up to 14 reference images in one generation, so a saved model, several garments and a location can go into the same image. Google describes it as its latest high-efficiency image model and the more efficient counterpart to its Pro image model.12

How do you run an art direction on Gemini 2.1?

Ask your assistant. With the Uwear MCP server connected to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, the assistant reads your products, your saved models and your art directions, prepares the shoot, and runs it on the model you name. Gemini 2.1 is the default image model, and you can name another one in the same request. For a product-page shoot, start from the Product page set system template and ask for its front photo on both engines before you create the full set.

Prompts to try Gemini 2.1 with an art direction

Paste these into Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant connected to the Uwear MCP server. Attach or name your products first.

Shoot with a saved direction

“Shoot these products on my saved model with my art direction, on Gemini 2.1, one image per product at 2K. Show me the brief before you run it.”

Compare the two engines

“Start from the Product page set system template for this product. Run its front photo on Gemini 2.1 and on GPT Image 2.5 with my art direction, and show me the two side by side before you create the full set.”

Start a direction from nothing

“Create a Uwear art direction for these products: one place, one kind of light, the shoes, and three moments to rotate between images. Show me the direction, then run one test image on Gemini 2.1.”

The Uwear API applies the same saved direction and the same model to automated jobs. Studio works too: choose Gemini 2.1 in the model picker and apply a saved art direction.

Questions about Gemini 2.1 for fashion photos

Is Gemini 2.1 the same model as Nano Banana 2.1?

Yes. Google released the model on October 6, 2026 as Gemini Nano Banana 2.1, with the API name gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Uwear lists it as Gemini 2.1 in the model picker, in the MCP server and on the models page. It is the default image model on Uwear since that day.

Is Gemini 2.1 (Nano Banana 2.1) good for fashion photos?

Yes, and most of all for photos that must look like a camera made them. With a saved art direction, Gemini 2.1 returned hard sun with cast shadows, candid moments and small unplanned details such as the edge of a paper studio set. With a one-line prompt and no direction, it returned the same grey studio frame as other models.

Is Gemini 2.1 better than GPT Image 2.5 for fashion?

They are good at different things. In Uwear’s tests, Gemini 2.1 gave the more natural, more photographic image from the same art direction. GPT Image 2.5 followed the direction more literally and wrote small garment lettering clearly at 2K, where Gemini 2.1 wrote a different word. Use Gemini 2.1 first for editorial and lifestyle images, and compare both when a garment carries fine print.

Can Gemini 2.1 render small text on clothing?

Large prints and logos carried from the product photo in Uwear’s test. Very small lettering did not at 2K: a label that reads CHICANE came back as a different word in two runs. One 4K run wrote it almost correctly. For garments with tiny text, generate at 4K and check the result, or use GPT Image 2.5.

How many credits does Gemini 2.1 cost on Uwear?

Gemini 2.1 costs 3 credits for a 1K image, 5 credits for 2K and 10 credits for 4K. It accepts up to 14 reference images in one generation. Current rates for every model are on the Uwear models page.

Do I need an art direction to use Gemini 2.1?

No, but the art direction is where the model shows its strength. An art direction is a saved, written direction that holds light, backdrop, framing, styling, footwear and the moments to rotate. Uwear applies it to every image in a shoot, on any image model, from Studio, the MCP server or the API.
