Fashion production glossary
Garment drape
Garment drape is the way fabric hangs, folds, bends, and falls over a body or support. It is shaped by the material's weight and stiffness, the garment's cut and construction, fit, pose, contact points, movement, and gravity.
Context
Understand the term in production
Drape is a key visual cue for both material and fit. An image may preserve color and silhouette yet still feel incorrect if folds are too rigid, fabric clings in the wrong places, or gravity and body contact do not agree with the garment.
How it works
Follow the production logic
- 01
Read the material
Use reference views to understand weight, stiffness, stretch, thickness, and surface behavior.
- 02
Trace support and gravity
Check where the garment rests on the body and how folds travel from those contact points.
- 03
Compare the complete silhouette
Review hem, volume, tension, fold rhythm, and fit cues across the full image set.
