Hollow man effect
The hollow man effect is the finished visual result of removing a mannequin or body support from an apparel image while preserving the garment's worn shape and visible interior. It is also commonly called the ghost mannequin or invisible mannequin effect.
Context
Understand the term in production
The effect is especially useful for necklines, collars, waistbands, sleeves, and other openings that look incomplete when a support is simply erased. A convincing result depends on compatible exterior and interior views, clean masking, and accurate edge work.
How it works
Follow the production logic
- 01
Photograph the exterior
Capture the garment on a support so its volume and construction remain stable.
- 02
Reveal the interior
Make a separate view of the labels, collar, lining, or other area hidden by the support.
- 03
Complete the illusion
Combine the frames, remove the support, and refine edges, shadows, and garment symmetry.
