Flat lay photography
Flat lay photography is an overhead imaging method in which a garment or product is arranged on a flat surface and photographed from above. It presents the item without a visible model or mannequin, making silhouette, color, and surface details easy to compare.
Context
Understand the term in production
Flat lays are useful as product records, merchandising inputs, and source images for downstream editing or generation. They communicate the outline of a garment clearly, but they show less information about fit, volume, and drape than on-model imagery.
How it works
Follow the production logic
- 01
Prepare the surface
Choose a clean background and lighting setup that separates the product from the scene.
- 02
Shape the garment
Arrange hems, sleeves, closures, and accessories so the intended silhouette reads clearly.
- 03
Capture from above
Keep the camera square to the surface, then review crop, color, wrinkles, and visible details.
